What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a practice that takes a holistic approach to achieve health and wellness. It originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. It is recently starting to become popular in occidental cultures. Ayurveda heals the body and the mind. It has a sister practice, yoga, that heals the spirit. How is an old philosophy relevant to today’s healthcare system? The APA, Ayurvedic Professionals Association, believes that Ayurveda has never been more relevant since healthcare treatments are moving from illness to wellbeing. The emphasis of healthcare is changing to focus more on prevention, lifestyle treatments, and Ayurvedic principles. One of the most important principles is the usage of popular herbs in Ayurveda to balance the mind, body, and soul.
The Doshas
Ayurveda takes into account our minds, bodies, interactions, food, energy, and the natural world. It makes them part of five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. A combination of these elements results in three doshas: Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. Based on your dosha, there could be an imbalance of any of these elements causing a physical or mental illness. A person’s dosha determines not only their health but also their personality. Healthline gives more information about each dosha, what they mean in terms of personality and what diet suits each dosha best. The goal of Ayurvedic healing practices is to bring harmony and re-story balance within the mind, body, and soul. Ayurvedic practitioners use a variety of herbs and spices to achieve this balance and help the body recover from illness. In the following section, you will find out common herbs in Ayurveda with therapeutic uses.
Ayurvedic Herb Benefits
Ayurveda is a practice concerned with healing from the inside out. Ayurvedic practitioners use herbs to clean the body and keep it in balance. Rose, oregano, cumin, sage, tulsi, rosemary, peppermint, mint, and coriander are some of the most popular herbs in Ayurveda. The following graphs show the therapeutic uses that these herbs are frequently used for:
- Rose: used to treat halitosis, cold, cough, fever, skin disease, and general debility.
- Oregano: used to treat flatulent colic, and to stimulate menstrual flow.
- Cumin: used to treat vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, fever, worm infestation, leucorrhea, cough, and bronchitis.
- Sage: used to treat flatulence, cough, asthma, fever, gingivitis, general debility, and halitosis.
- Tulsi: used to treat vomiting, fever, cough, asthma, worm infestation, skin disease, painful urination and to detoxify the body.
- Rosemary: used to treat flatulent colic, headache, and painful urination. It stimulates menstrual flow and has strong antibacterial action. It is used as a nervine tonic.
- Peppermint: used to treat vomiting, halitosis, flatulent colic, cough, and fever.
- Mint: used to treat vomiting, halitosis, flatulent colic, diarrhea, diuresis, helminthiasis, cough, and fever.
- Coriander: used to treat vomiting, flatulent colic, diarrhea, burning sensation, and fever.
There are many other herbs in Ayurveda with therapeutic uses such as asafoetida, clove, and fenugreek. One of the reasons why we have focused on rose, oregano, cumin, sage, tulsi, rosemary, peppermint, mint, and coriander is due to the versatility of these Ayurvedic herbs in the kitchen. Any of these Ayurvedic herbs are used in plenty of recipes to add flavour and get a health boost. In one of the following sections, you will find shopping links to benefit from the use of these herbs in your kitchen.
Why is Ayurveda important to us?
At Holy Lama, we provide body care and seasoning products derived from herbs in Ayurveda. But, why is Ayurveda important to us? Our founders at Holy Lama Naturals grew up using the principles of Ayurveda to maintain balanced health and wellbeing. Gouri Kubair, founder and director, has a conscious approach to health, wellness, and personal care. She has chosen Kerala, the birthplace of Ayurveda, as the place to have the company’s factory. Besides, Gouri’s personal story created her belief and trust in Ayurvedic principles. When Gouri’s uncle suffered from Parkinson’s Disease, her father treated him with Ayurvedic medicine. Gouri has also used Ayurvedic medicine to treat her back pain post-pregnancy.
Due to the healing that Ayurveda has brought to her and her family, they have developed a lifestyle following its principles and started using popular herbs in Ayurveda to create vegan and natural products for their business. They make body care products and Spice Drops® using Ayurvedic herbs. Spice Drops® are natural extracts of ayurvedic herbs, roots, and flowers to be used in the kitchen. Gouri’s passion for Ayurveda does not stop there. Her family owns Lasha Kerala, an Ayurveda and wellness resort in Kerala, India. The resort has been built last year, and it is now ready to take guests.
